CaddieGolfLeague is a non profit initiative started only with the soul purpose to give back to the caddies. Passionate golfers Brijesh Patel & Siddharth Naik started this initiative by designing a golf tournament to suffice this purpose. A golf tournament only for the caddies where they get a chance to play & experience a real competitive event. Cash prizes are given to various winners as per the many Catagories in this multiple layered stroke play event.
In golf, a caddy (or caddie) is the person who carries a player's bag and clubs, and gives insightful advice and moral support. A good caddy is aware of the challenges and obstacles of the golf course being played, along with the best strategy in playing it. This includes knowing overall yardage, pin placements and club selection. Thus a caddie plays an important role to a golfer.
In india an average caddie would make about rs3000-7000/- a month ( 50-115$) by carrying the bags of club recreational golfers. This well may be an under par wage to make their ends meet. Job insecurity is tremendously high and it's not that they would get a bag to carry every day. It's an all weather job and thankless one too. Looking at all the hardships a caddie has to go through as golfers we spend a lot of time with these caddies - yes during a round of golf. One would chat up with the caddies and try and learn about tier lives, family, earnings etc...and this is what made us think and feel that we should do something to give back and try and make a difference in their lives.
Young minds Anush Iyer and Siddharth Laheri kind fully joined in and helped us to deliver our first CaddieGolfLeague golf tournament for the caddies. Thus was in April 2014 . The local golf courses were generous enough to extend full support eventually it were their caddies who would play and benifit. The event was designed on a three round three consecutive Monday nine hole strokeplay format with gross scogrossing round played on a different course each time. Three three golf courses were Kensville Golf & Country Club, Gulmohar Greens Golf & Country Club , Kalhaar Blues & Greens and now the fourth one Belvedere Golf & Country Club has also joined in. Last year 39 caddies participated. The total prize purse was one lac sixty thousand. Brijesh & myself have put in our own contributions. The golf courses not only offer the course free of charge but also sponsor the F&B and contribute in the prize pool. More support followed in form of donations from many local club golfer who also came forward to lend their golf kits/ golf bags to the Caddie Participant during the tournament rounds. Even the local photographer Jaydeep Jadeja who is now an expert in golf photography offered his honorary services. Friends in the media also noticed this event and initiative and happily covered it extensively. The caddies loved it and they were extremely thankful to have played a golf tournament specifically for them and to benifit from it. As a result the golf courses now allow them to play a round on the course during their free time and the local pros also don't hesitate to help improve their skills.
Looking at this Brijesh & I decided to make this an annual feature. This year there 51 Caddie Participant signed up to play and compete. Three tournament rounds of CaddieGolfLeague 2015 are scheduled for
Rd1 20Th April at Kensville Golf & Country Club ( completed)
Rd2 27th April at Gulmohar Greens Golf & Country Club
Rd3 4th May at Kalhaar Blues & Greens ( final rd followed by prize distribution)
Amongst these Caddie Participant there are lot of promising young talents. I am sure if the golf experts and golf coaches see them play and swing will agree. Our goal is to find them more support & sponsors who can provide them with monitory assistance & golf coaching assistance so that they can improve their skills and keep progressing to make a carrier and obtain a better living for themselves. Anyone who wishes to help us help these caddies is most welcome and they can write to us at cglsince2014@gmail.com
